New Hampshire town elections offer a preview of citizenship voting rules being considered nationwide

New Hampshire has tested out its new law requiring people to show proof of citizenship before registering to vote. The New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights says at least 56 people who tried to register at the polls during the March 11 town elections were turned away. Those experiences could prove instructive for the rest of the country as Congress and more than a dozen other states consider similar legislation. Read more.

Why this matters:

• Voting rights groups are particularly concerned that married women who have changed their names will encounter trouble when trying to register because their birth certificates list their maiden names.
  
  

• The U.S. House passed legislation last year to require proof of citizenship for voter registration, but it stalled in the Senate amid Democratic opposition. With Republicans now in full control of Congress, the House is expected to take up the issue again soon.
  
  

• New Hampshire is one of eight states with laws that require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, and similar legislation is pending in 17 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Expelled South African ambassador returns home and says he will wear US sanction as a ‘badge of dignity’

The South African ambassador who was expelled from the United States and declared persona non grata by the Trump administration was welcomed home at an airport Sunday by hundreds of supporters who sang songs praising him. Read more.

What to know:

• Ebrahim Rasool was expelled for comments he made on a webinar that included him saying that the Make America Great Again movement was partly a response to “a supremacist instinct.” It is highly unusual for the U.S. to expel a foreign ambassador.
  
  

• Rasool was declared persona non grata by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a post on X on March 14. Rubio said Rasool was a “race-baiting politician” who hates the U.S. and Trump. Although Rubio didn’t directly cite a reason, his post linked to a story by the conservative Breitbart news site that reported on a talk Rasool gave on a webinar organized by a South African think tank.
  
  

• The U.S. president issued an executive order last month cutting all funding to South Africa, alleging its government is supporting the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Iran, and pursuing anti-white policies at home.

President Donald Trump on Friday called on his supporters to vote for a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court who already had the full-throated backing of Trump’s billionaire adviser Elon Musk. Trump’s post came a little over a week before the April 1 election that will determine control of the court, which since 2023 has a majority of liberal justices. Read more.
