Rare earth elements are a set of 17 elements that are essential in many kinds of consumer technology, including cellphones, hard drives, and electric vehicles. Ukraine’s rare earth elements are largely untapped because of the war and because of state policies regulating the mineral industry.
China, Trump’s chief geopolitical adversary, is the world’s largest producer of rare earth elements. Both the U.S and Europe have sought to reduce their dependence on Beijing.
