From the southwestern U.S. to Minnesota, Iowa and even parts of New Jersey, it was a dismal winter. Many communities marked record dryness between December and the end of February. Snowpack was nearly nonexistent in some spots, and vegetation was left tinder dry. All comprise ingredients for elevated wildfire risk. More than 1,000 firefighters and fire managers recently participated in an annual wildfire academy in Arizona, where training covered everything from air operations to cutting back brush and building fire lines. For most of the day, the mood was somber among relatives of dozens of workers missing at the site where a multi-story building collapsed in Bangkok. A volunteer group with sniffer dogs took time away from its grim task of searching the rubble to bring the animals on a visit top help lift their spirit.
